Asbestos testing is important to you and your family because if asbestos fibres can become airborne and inhaled, the lungs cannot expel the fibers, leaving the asbestos fibres embedded in the tissue. If this exposure continues over a long period of time, serious health problems can result such as scarring of the lung tissue and even various forms of cancer.

Asbestos Facts

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fibre being composed of many microscopic “fibrils” that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to various dangerous lung conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer, so it is now notorious as a serious health and safety hazard.

If you or your family are exposed to high levels of asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer in the forms of mesothelioma, which is a cancer of the lining of the chest and the abdominal cavity, and asbestosis, inAsbestos Testing Services which the lungs become scarred with fibrous tissue.

Generally people are workers who because of their work environmnet have usually been exposed to high levels of asbestos for a long period of time. The symptoms of these diseases do not usually appear until about 20 to 30 years after their first exposure to asbestos.

If disturbed, asbestos material may release asbestos fibres, which can be inhaled into the lungs. The fibers can remain there for a long time, increasing the risk of disease.  Asbestos fibers can float in the air contaminating a large area or series of rooms.

Asbestos material that can crumble easily when disturbed or handled, or that has been sawed, scraped, or sanded into a powder, is most likely to create a greater health hazard.  Century Homes often have asbestos on heating ducts and on plumbing pipes.  Some Vermiculite insulation is also known have asbestos content.

Asbestos Removal Requirements

The Ontario Ministry of Labour places working with Asbestos into 3 Classifications of Work.  Most residential homes which have asbestos related products that require removal will come under Class 2 and Class 3.

How is work on plaster stucco and other hard finishes that are ACM but not explicitly mentioned in the Regulation classified?

As such, Type 1 procedures cannot be used for work on these materials. The work will likely be classified as a Type 2 (subsection 12(3), paragraph 6, subsection 12(3) paragraph 8) or Type 3 (subsection 12(4) paragraph 5) operation depending on the tools used.
